Look out for Paul Roorda’s “Time Stops” while enjoying the Grand Porch Party this year. These interactive metal boxes, found attached to wooden hydro poles in the Waterloo West neighbourhood, are meant to amuse, inspire curiosity, and provoke thought.
Made from old cash boxes with glass windows, they are filled with photos and vintage objects. Old clocks, barometers, glassware, and photos of skies and floods remind us of the unpredictable weather to come. The Time Stops are interactive too: Wind them up and listen to the mysterious tune of an altered a music box mechanism. These miniature cabinets of curiosity are a poetic warning to take notice.
